6th Wounded Soldier Celebrates Housewarming in Artsakh

16 May 2017

On May 16, Samvel Mejlumyan, a soldier wounded in the Artsakh Liberation War in 1992, celebrated a housewarming in the Askeran town of Artsakh. The house was renovated by the Foundation, as part of the Housing for Wounded Soldiers project.

Samvel Mejlumyan belonged to freedom fighter groups who fought for the defense and liberation of Artsakh in the early nineties. He fought and was wounded in his native Askeran, eventually losing both of his legs. After undergoing several surgeries, Samvel ended up in a wheelchair. “Providing good housing is one of the best ways to support a soldier like me. For me, the renovated house not only means a more comfortable place to live in, but also ensures that I can move around freely in my own home and therefore be more independent,” Samvel noted during the housewarming ceremony.

The “Wounded Soldiers” initiative commenced in April 2016, in response to the Four-Day War. At that time, the Foundation launched an urgent appeal to help those directly affected by the war. With funds raised during these emergency appeals and through additional support from individual donors, we managed to renovate or purchase new homes for 5 wounded soldiers during a 1-year period: 3 in the Martakert region and 2 in the Hadrut region.

Samvel Mejlumyan is the sixth soldier to receive a renovated house from the Tufenkian Foundation. He is the first soldier of the 1992 war to be supported in the framework of this project.

We are committed to provide better housing for Artsakh’s soldiers in need, no matter when or where they were wounded. Although the 2016 emergency has ended, the need is ongoing. With many wounded or disabled soldiers requiring similar assistance, we will continue this work indefinitely.
